Sarees handwoven in a small town Chanderi, is called a Chanderi Saree.
Chanderi is located in Vindhyachal mountain range close to river Betwa in Ashoknagar district in Madhya Pradesh, India.
What is Chanderi saree or A saree will be called a Chanderi saree only if it meets the following (mainly) four criterias
1. Sraee should be woven in Chanderi city only.
2. It should be woven on Handloom (Hatkargha) only.
3. Pure silk and cotton yarns & zari should be used to weave the saree.
4. Last but the most important , the woven design, the WEAVING TECHNIQUE (to weave the designs or motifs) which set a Chanderi saree apart from other crafts.
Its the Weaving technique (other few factors like dying, setting of loom & few others) which aparts Chanderis, Maheshwaris, Banarsi, Kanjeevaram, Patola, Jamdani, Paithini, Moirang Phee, Puanchei, Kani, Tanchoi, Mishimi, Kunbi, Bodo, Purnakumbham which aparts each craft from the other.
